Matlock Bath Illuminations
& The Heights of Abraham
17th - 21st September 2021

The Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders' Association decorate themed models with an array of coloured lights, mounted on rowing boats, and paraded on the Riv-er Derwent giving a unique and illuminous display.

On our first full day excursion we travel to Matlock Bath, a unique village set in a beautiful gorge, with attractive riverside gardens, wooded hillsides and rocky lime-stone crags. Its heyday was in Victorian times when it became known as “Little Switzerland” by the poet, Lord Byron. Our first port of call in the amazing Heights of Abraham. When the grounds to the Heights of Abraham were first opened to vis-itors in the 1780s, modern technology was nothing but a dream. The first guests had no choice but to scale the steep slopes of Masson Hill to take in all that the estate had to offer. In 1984 the current owners took inspiration from Switzerland, and had a cable car installed. As well as a return trip on the cable car, you will have a chance to visit the 2 show caves at the top, which have regular guided tours. After some time at leisure, we will stay for the evening to see the illuminations them-selves, and then the spectacular firework display. Our return to the hotel will be fairly late in the evening, so dinner is not included on this night.

Our second full day excursion will be to the Peak District with stops at the Spa town of Buxton and Bakewell with it’s attractive courtyards, individual shops and the chance to sample the town’s famous Traditional Bakewell Pudding and visit the town's weekly market.
