Inclusive Austia - Alpine Passes,

Lakes and the Eagles Nest

26th September - 4th October 2021

After an overnight stop in the Aachen, we will arrive at our base for this tour, the Lifthotel, Kirchberg in Tirol, in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps. During our stay in Kirchberg we will be taking in some of the local attractions as well as having the opportunity to see some of the most stunning scenery the area has to offer. Our stay at the main hotel will be on an inclusive basis, with packed lunches provided each day, and various drinks included at certain times, as well as the normal breakfast and evening meals. You will also receive a visitors travel pass, allowing free travel on the local bus and rail network, allowing you to make the most of any free time.

Our first full day excursion will be an adventurous ride aboard the 127 year-old Achensee Steam Cog Railway up the mountain to the scenic Achensee Lake, some seven kilometres and 440 metres altitude. The Achensee Steam Cog Railway is the oldest of its kind in Europe still in constant use. At the top is the Achensee Lake, where we will enjoy a scenic lake cruise, including some local coffee and cake. The Achensee is also called the "Fjord of the Alps" and bears this name with good rea-son! It is nestled between two huge mountain ranges, the Rofan and Karwendel massifs. We will also pay a visit to the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck, a charming Alpine City and twice host to the Winter Olympic Games. Innsbruck’s Old Town is a small area of sturdy medieval houses, many painted in lively pastel colours and supported by sloping buttresses. As you stroll along the main street of the Old Town Innsbruck, you’ll feel as if you had taken a trip back in time to an era of knights and medieval merchants. Busy street cafes afford great views of Innsbruck’s most fa-mous landmark, the Golden Roof, and its 2,738 gold-plated copper tiles.

For our second excursion we travel to the pretty town of Zell am See, located on a peninsula at the base of a mountain on the shores of Lake Zell. You will have time at leisure to perhaps take a stroll around the medieval streets or walk along the lake. We then travel south via the Spectacular Thurn Pass, one of the highest in Austria to the impressive Krimml falls. With a drop of 380 metres the falls are the fifth larg-est in the world and are the highest in Europe. There is a walk of around 10 - 15 mins from the coach park to the falls.

Our next full day excursion will literally take us into the clouds. We start with a scenic drive into the Hohe Tauern National Park, via Mittersill and Matrei. You will have some time at leisure in the delightful village of Heiligenblut located at the foot of the mighty Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain. After lunch we will drive the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, one of the highest Alpine passes in Europe. There will be a stop at the Franz-Josef-Höhe viewpoint for a chance to capture the stunning scenery with your camera. Our return to the hotel will be via Kitzbühel, known for the annual Hahnenkamm downhill race. Upscale shops and cafes line the streets of its medieval centre. Museum Kitzbühel chronicles the history of the town and the area’s winter sports, with paintings by local artist Alfons Walde. Its rooftop terrace has sweeping town views.

Our final full day excursion is to the romantic and historic market town of Berch-tesgarten. This town and the surrounding national park is one of the region’s most popular destinations. You will have time to explore the town’s attractions including the buildings with their decorated façades, churches and a Royal Palace, and per-haps some time for lunch before we ascend the nearby mountain via a special shut-tle bus and a lift for an included visit to Hitler’s infamous ‘Eagle’s Nest’ .
